Sri Lanka - The Pearl of the Indian Ocean
The beautiful island - also known as "the lions' pride land" known - south of the Indian subcontinent in the Indian Ocean.
This tropical island is a wonder of nature. All nature lovers will be thrilled to be here:
Mountains, rain forests, waterfalls, landscapes, rivers, sea, beaches. The Sri Lankan beauty of nature harmonized with the wild kingdom. A lush abundance and species richness of tropical flora and fauna this island has to offer. The highly diversified island differs from city to city, district to district and province to province. It is spoken Sinhala and Tamil in Sri Lanka.
This pearl of the Indian Ocean also has a rich history.
Since 1972 is the island of Sri Lanka - formerly Ceylon. The majority of the population professes to Buddhism, they live mainly in the south and central. This is followed by the Hindus, who tend to live in the north. Many Christians and Muslims in the West but in the East are found in Sri Lanka.
The natural disasters - the tsunami in 2004 destroyed large parts of eastern and southern coast of Sri Lanka. The west coast, south of the capital Colombo - was affected. Due to the armed conflict on the island of the reconstruction projects in this country went ahead at the slowest and much was destroyed during the civil war again. The recent civil war between the Sinhalese and the indigenous Tamils in May 2009 was declared to be ended. He lasted since 1983, and his tracks are still fresh.
Can we trust the peace?
The military seems to be not yet so sure, and the farther you get into the northern part of the island, the more present, the military. In terms of tourism is therefore understandable: over the past years, relatively little tourism in Sri Lanka.
Therefore, Sri Lanka still a paradise for backpackers, but tourism is boosted increasingly large hotel and concrete blocks are being planned. 2010
